Forest Service Fiscal 2024 Budget Justification

This publication summarizes the fiscal year (FY) 2024 Budget for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The USDA Forest Service’s mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations.

The 2024 Forest Service Budget request for discretionary appropriations is $9.7 billion. This is an increase of $2.6
billion from the 2023 enacted appropriations. The 2024 Budget request includes:

  • $2.97 billion for Wildland Fire Management
  • $2.23 billion for the management of National Forest System lands
  • $235 million for Capital Improvement and Maintenance
  • $349 million for Forest and Rangeland Research
  • $328 million for State, Private, and Tribal Forestry
  • $1.32 billion for Forest Service Operations
  • $2.3 billion for Wildfire Suppression Operations Reserve Fund
